Why investing in Colombia's Tourism Industry?

It is safe to say that the tourism industry in Colombia was prospering before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. The Tourism Competitiveness Index, a measurement of the factors that make it attractive to develop business in the travel and tourism industry of individual countries, of 2019 (TTCI) awarded Colombia with a score of 4.0 out of 6. This was a significant increase in comparison to 2017, when the TTCI score was 3.83.  4.0 is also the highest TTCI score ever recorded for Colombia, and brought it close in ranking to famous tourist destination Peru, scoring 4.2. (Belgium scored a 4.5 as a point of reference).

Obviously, 2 years of Covid-19 pandemic (2020-2021) had an impact on Colombia and its economy. The country only reopened its borders for foreign visitors as from December 14th, 2021.

However, there is very little reason to be concerned about this when you have a closer look at Colombia’s tourism trends of the last 10 years, and the predictions for the coming years.

Past Years:

  • Domestic overnight stays rose 39% over the last 10 years, while international visitation expanded even with 196%. Colombia’s share of global travel has increased, with notable gains in travel from European markets (from 0.3% of long-haul travel to 0.8%) as well as gains in South American intra-regional travel.
  • The end of armed conflict and the final 2016 accord between the government and the main armed opposition group, the FARC, were key to strong growth in Colombia’s tourism industry.
  • In 2019, domestic and international visitor spending directly contributed US$5.9 billion to Colombian GDP and supported a US$15.7 billion total impact, including indirect and induced impacts.
  • The Colombian travel and tourism industry represented 5% of total GDP in 2019 and it has experienced consistent growth between 2010 and 2019.
  • Currently, Travel&Tourism is the second most important industry of Colombia (with regards to the total amount of income generated to the country), just behind the mining-energy industry.

Expectations

According to predictions done by Tourism Economics (an Oxford Economics Company):
  • Overnight visits to Colombia are set to exceed 2019 levels by 2023, reaching a total of 14.5 million.
  • The recovery in travel and tourism’s total contribution to GDP will accelerate into 2021 and is expected to grow 59%.
  • By 2024, the contribution to GDP will exceed the numbers of 2019, and continue to steadily grow to a US$21.5 billion total in 2028.

This makes it clear that Colombia’s tourism offer is growing which comes as no surprise given its natural and cultural wealth, and remarkable efforts put in tackling significant challenges in infrastructure trends, competitiveness, and tourism sustainability.

The current president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, has mentioned several times that the Tourism Industry will be a key player of his development plan.

He makes special emphasis in promoting a sustainable tourism,  with special care for the environment. A responsible and nature oriented tourism will be therefore the key drivers of his program.

His goal is to continue developing the tourism industry in Colombia so that at the end of his government (in 2026), the country will be receiving 15 million tourists per year (in 2019 this figure was 4.5 million).
